Samsung aims to fix Galaxy S22 Ultra’s display issue with a software update

Just a few days ago, numerous owners of the Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, took to Reddit and other social media platforms to share an issue plaguing the QHD+ 6.8” Super AMOLED display. The issue in question seems to be a pixelated white line running horizontal across the top half of the display.

What’s more interesting is that the width of this line varies from device to device. Moreover, for some, the line intermittently appears and stays on for a few seconds, while for others, it seems to appear when the display is touched.

Samsung seems to have taken notice of the situation and is working on a software patch. The announcement was posted on Samsung’s official European forum by the moderator.

As more people have started to complain about the display issue, Samsung has managed to narrow the occurrence down to the YouTube app and the usage of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Until the update is rolled out, Samsung recommends what the users have already tried as a temporary fix. Firstly, you can switch to the lower FHD+ resolution or you can keep the QHD+ resolution but switch to Vivid colour mode.

There was also a Samsung Galaxy S22 user on Reddit who experienced a different kind of display glitch. It was multiple horizontal lines, albeit thinner lines, appearing across the screen. Samsung did not mention anything about the Galaxy S22 in the update, so it’s unclear if Samsung will issue the patch to all variants in the Galaxy S22 series.

The new Exynos 2200 SoC is paired with an Xclipse 920 GPU based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture. As with any first-generation products, some issues are to be expected. However, Samsung should have captured this issue during its quality control process. That being said, from first impressions, Samsung has identified the issue to be software related, so it can be fixed with a relatively easy software patch.

Currently, it is unknown if this issue will plague the Snapdragon powered Galaxy S22 Ultra that Malaysia will be receiving. The first batch of the variant will be shipping to the US on 25th February 2022. In Malaysia, those that pre-ordered during promotion period A – before the Galaxy Watch 4 was offered as a pre-order bonus – can collect your order starting from the 3rd of March 2022.

To be safe, check for any software update that list “display fix” when you first boot the phone.
