According to new benchmark comparisons by PC Mag, the new devices from the Samsung Galaxy S22 series still cannot outperform the Apple iPhone 13 Pro. Upon testing, PC Mag stated that the S22’s Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU “lacks the raw processing power” of Apple’s A15 chip.

The phones were put in benchmark comparisons where they were tested on their “CPU and GPU performance”—which PC Mag assured that was “only a small part of the smartphone experience”. However, raw CPU and GPU performance can affect tasks from video editing to gaming frame rates.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra—the highest performing S22 device—scored 3433 in multi-core testing, 1232 in single-core testing, and 448 in machine learning testing. As for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, it scored 4647 in multi-core tests, 1735 in single-core testing, and 948 in machine learning tests. But PC Mag still notes that the Galaxy S22 is the “most powerful Android phone” they’ve tested so far.

“There is definitely improvement from last year’s Snapdragon 888 to this year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. We saw a 13% rise in Geekbench single-core scores and a 9% rise in Geekbench multi-core scores. On the GFXBench graphics benchmark, we saw an improvement of 20% or more depending on circumstances,” said PC Mag.

However, PC Mag also touched on how the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra could have some heating and performance throttling issues. When they tested the Ultra, the phone “quickly became warm” and returned much lower results. It’s also not clear whether the problem is a hardware or software issue.
