This is a RM359 durian keycap, made completely out of pewter

Those of you who are into mechanical keyboards are also likely familiar with the high price tags that go along with it, and it’s perhaps especially true in the custom keyboard scene. But if you’re both a keyboard fanatic and a fan of the durian, you might be tempted to shell out RM359 for the Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap made by Royal Selangor in collaboration with local custom keyboard shore Rebult Keyboards.

Royal Selangor, if you’re unaware, is one of the world’s biggest pewter manufacturers. Their tin alloy can be found in everything from tableware and tea sets to desk accessories and decorative ornaments. The company’s latest foray is the durian shaped keycap, which Rebult Keyboards says was casted from a master mould hand-sculpted by a Royal Selangor sculptor. Each keycap was then finished by hand with patterns to mimic the durian’s shape and form. If you get your hands on one, it’ll also come with its own numbered authentication card and special Royal Selangor packaging too.

There’s not much else about the actual specifications of the Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap though, with no weight measurements listed on its product page. Rebult Keyboard does state though that there may be some imperfections on the keycap. Because of the way the mould is constructed, the base is ever so slightly off-centred and there’s a noticeable gap between the keycap and the key to the right of it when on a keyboard. There’s also a slight spillover in between the base keycap and the durian too.

Nevertheless, we’re sure custom keyboard lovers will be keeping an eye on the Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap as it’s a unique looking keycap that doubles as a reminder of tin’s major role in Malaysian history. Even in our office, we have a few who dabble in making custom keyboards, like Ray who documented her first custom keyboard here. But while her entire custom board costs RM500, the Royal Selangor Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap will cost RM359 and only 200 units of it will be made. The sale will begin this 19 of February at 10pm Malaysian time on the Rebult Keyboards website, so if you really want this iconic fruit on your desk you’ll want to set a reminder.

For more information on the Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap, you can check out its product page on the Rebult Keyboards website.
