To accelerate COVID-19 vaccine boosters among high-risk groups, the Ministry of Health has announced walk-in vaccinations for senior citizens starting this coming Wednesday. Senior citizens aged 60 years old and above, who are fully vaccinated at least 3 months ago are eligible to get the booster jab through the walk-in process.
According to the statement, senior citizens can walk-in at the 4 Mega PPVs – World Trade Centre, Axiata Arena, Ideal Convention Centre and Soka Gakkai, beginning 19th January 2022. Take note that the walk-in session will only start in the afternoon at 2pm (12pm for Soka Gakkai) daily except for public holidays.
Selected off-site PPVs located in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Pulau Pinang and Sarawak will also allow walk-ins for senior citizens starting from 24th January 2022. The full list of participating off-site PPVs for senior citizens will be announced by ProtectHealth Corporation.
Before going to the vaccination centre, senior citizens are urged to get their digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate ready on their MySejahtera app as well as their identification card. Prior to receiving the booster jab, individuals are urged to get enough sleep and to have a good breakfast before going to the PPV. Individuals who are feeling unwell or are having a high-risk COVID-19 status on MySejahtera are urged to defer their vaccination plans.
As of 16th January, Khairy Jamaluddin revealed that 40% of Malaysia’s adult population has received their booster shot. Over 70% of senior citizens (aged 60 years old and above) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Pulau Pinang and Sarawak have already received their boosters. Boosters are currently recommended to ensure optimal protection against COVID-19.
According to the Institute of Clinical Research, a fully vaccinated person has a 3.6x higher risk of COVID-19 death versus a fully vaccinated person who has received a booster. Meanwhile, the risk of COVID-19 infection for a fully vaccinated individual is 3.4x higher than a fully vaxxed person with a booster.
Pfizer vaccines will be offered at Mega PPVs for selected individuals
The Ministry of Health has revealed that the Mega PPVs in the Klang Valley are currently offering AstraZeneca boosters for those who have been fully vaccinated with AstraZeneca or Sinovac. Starting 19th January 2022, Pfizer booster vaccines will be made available for selected individuals namely pregnant women with appointments or individuals who can’t take AstraZeneca vaccines.
