Sony announces colourful PlayStation 5 covers after ordering Dbrand to stop selling theirs

Sony announced an extremely colourful set of first-party console covers, as well as DualSense controllers, for the PlayStation 5. The company made the announcement after forcing the company Dbrand to stop selling their custom-made PS5 faceplates.

What happened with Dbrand?

In February 2021, Dbrand started making Darkplates. They were in great demand, being almost as hard to get as the actual console. Sony then sent over a cease and desist letter, so Dbrand was forced to comply and pull Darkplates from sale on 16 October. It turns out that Sony acquired a registered design patent this year and so was now able to take legal action. Dbrand then resumes selling Darkplates after redesigning them with air vents.

Previously in 2020, a UK company PlateStation5.com, which made custom faceplates, was forced to rebrand to CustomizeMyPlates.com after receiving a trademark complaint from Sony. Additionally, Sony also threatened to take the UK company to court if they continued to sell and distribute the custom-made faceplates.

Now, Dbrand has responded to Sony’s new “first-party console covers” announcement through Twitter. They said that if Sony was seeking to monopolise the PS5 console covers market, “the last thing they want” is competition from other brands. Dbrand also noted that it seems like a conspiracy closer to “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself”.

PS5 Console Covers

In any case, you would soon be able to get these official console covers for the PlayStation 5. They will come in 5 different colours: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, Cosmic Red, and Midnight Black. It’s important to note that these are standalone items that would need to be purchased separately—as a replacement for the default white covers.

To replace the covers for the PS5, you can just slide them onto the console. Removing the covers are also easy enough as they are designed to slide off without needing any tools. However, you would need to remove the covers whenever you need to access the SSD slot for expanding your storage.

PS5 DualSense Controllers

Sony also launched colourful DualSense controllers to match the console covers. The new ones come in three colours: Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple for now. They join the existing Cosmic Red and Midnight Black versions that were announced in May.

The Cosmic Red and Midnight Black console covers will be available in January 2022 in USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines. The Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple covers will be available in the first half of 2022 for the aforementioned regions. Other regions will get them later in the year.

The price for the covers, however, have not been announced yet. As for the new DualSense colours, they will be available in January 2022. The price for the Cosmic Red and Midnight Black controllers is USD 69.99 (RM296.34) each.
