We might soon find more women coders in the future thanking Doja Cat for introducing them to the field. Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organisation that aims to get more women and girls interested in the field of computer science, partnered with the pop artist to release a “first ever codable music video”—and it’s honestly pretty cool.
The music video can be experienced on dojacode.com, and it’s surprisingly easy and fun to get into. It’s also not at all difficult or overwhelming, which is something a lot of us—including me—feel about coding in general. This is probably exactly what the interactive music video intended.
The experience lets you enjoy the music video, but it introduces you to a different programming language—CSS, Javascript, and Python. The coding prompts aren’t too complicated, and you’ll only be able to make three decisions throughout. The first decision (to introduce CSS to you) lets you “paint the queen’s nails”. It’ll give you the space to type in almost any colour you can think of, including “pinkleopard”.
The second part of the experience (to introduce you to Javascript) lets you make a bunch of decisions—including the colour, height and speed of moving little particles, along with the “timezone” of a scene (picking Kuala Lumpur gives the scene a bright and sunny filter). You can also tweak the “cloud type” and choose a colour for the scene’s tint.
The third part (to introduce you to Python) lets you “create a flower shower”. You can choose the speed of the flower shower, the number of petals, the colour, scale and radius. After the experience, you’re guided to a page that exclaims—“I guess you’re a coder now?!”. I’m not going to lie… that’s pretty encouraging for someone who had no clue how to begin coding.
You can try it out on your own to experiment with different choices. It might not be super advanced, but the website goes a good job introducing how cool coding can be. You don’t even have to be a woman/girl to enjoy the site—just sayin’.
