I feel like I’m going insane. After seeing Mark Zuckerberg’s robot skin and Niantic’s crypto AR game, I can never tell what the tech world is going to throw at me next. This week, it’s the new Asus PureGo PD100: a fruit and vegetable cleanliness detector. You heard me right. The PureGo doesn’t even clean your vegetables for you. It just tells you the cleanliness level of your fruits and vegetables.
How to clean your produce with the PureGo
The first step of your produce cleaning process is manually cleaning the dirt from the surface yourself. You can use either water or tools for this step. Then, you need to soak your fruits and vegetables in clean water for two to three minutes, which will allow the pesticides and contaminants to dissolve in water.
Once you’ve soaked the produce, that’s where the PureGo comes in. Place the device in the soaking tub and it will start the cleanliness detection. Leave the tub under running water and the LED indicator on the top of the device will tell you how clean your produce is. If it’s red or orange, there are still impurities in the water, but once it’s green, you’re good to go.
You might think the small slits on the sides would be used for water filtration to absorb impurities, and you would be very wrong. Those slits are just so that leaves don’t enter the device and for the optical detection to work.
Once you finish your washing, you can show it off to your friends by sharing “your washing history log via social media”. That’s right. There’s a Bluetooth connected accompanying smartphone app as well. Imagine how jealous your friends would be when they see your washing history log.
Do you want to know the best part? The sensor can only “detect around 70% pesticide used in US in 2020″. Does this mean that the accuracy could be even less for pesticides in Malaysia? Asus mentions in the product page that this device does not work with Okinawa spinach, red amaranth, strawberries, mushrooms, cloud ear fungus, seaweed, and enoki mushrooms. I guess the PureGo can reassure you that your produce is adequately cleaned, but on the other hand, you could just… rinse your produce a couple times and get the exact same result.
At this point, I think it’s pretty clear that this product is kinda ridiculous. That’s alright though because the PureGo PD100 supports wireless charging, which redeems every ridiculous thing about it.
Pricing and availability
There is no local pricing yet, but the Asus PureGo PD100 is currently listed on the Asus website for USD 199 (about RM839). Also, if you get this product I will judge you just a little bit.
