Twitter‘s founder and CEO, Jack Dorsey, announced that he has resigned as CEO. In his tweet, Dorsey simply announced that he had resigned, but added a lengthy and detailed email screenshot—including information on who would be replacing him.

In the email, Dorsey named Parag Agrawal to replace him as CEO, who had been the longest-serving chief executive in the company’s 15-plus-year history. According to the email, the board ran a “rigorous process” considering “all options” before landing on Agrawal.

Agrawal hasn’t really been in the public eye as much until now. But we know that he’s a “close friend of Dorsey’s” and has worked his way up from being an engineer to a top executive. He first started at Twitter back in October 2011 with a focus on ad products and was later appointed chief technology officer in October 2017.

As CTO, one of Agrawal’s biggest projects has been his overseeing of the company’s decentralized Bluesky platform—which is intended as an “open and decentralized standard for social media”. This also fits Twitter’s direction into crypto, as the newly founded Twitter Crypto team reported under Agrawal and is also set to work closely with Bluesky.

“He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs. Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around,” wrote Dorsey.

In turn, Agrawal responded to his tweet, adding that there’s “so much excitement for the future”. He also posted a screenshot of an email, where he thanked Dorsey and his team.

“The world is watching us right now, even more than they have before. Lots of people are going to have lots of different views and opinions about today’s news,” wrote Agrawal.

In 2019, Dorsey announced plans to spend six months traveling through Africa, saying that the continent “will define the future (especially the bitcoin one!)”. Dorsey hasn’t fully resigned yet to help Parag with the transition, but plans to resign from the board in May in order to “give Parag the space he needs to lead”.
