Acer Aspire Vero made with recycled plastic launched in Malaysia, priced from RM3,399

Acer Malaysia has today officially announced the Acer Aspire Vero laptop for Malaysia. Part of Acer’s sustainability drive, the Aspire Vero is what they’re calling a ‘green PC’, with a chassis that’s made of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic while still having a very solid spec sheet.

30% of the main body is made with the aforementioned PCR plastic, while the keycaps itself go a step further by being built with 50% PCR plastic. According to Acer, this design choice means that each Aspire Vero saves around 21% of carbon dioxide emissions compared to a normal laptop. It also hasn’t been painted to further make it more eco-friendly, so it’ll only be available in its volcano ash colours. The green theme continues in the packaging, coming in a box made out of 80% recycled paper pulp and paper sleeves for the power adapter instead of plastic. Even the box can be folded into a DIY laptop stand, reminiscent of the Nintendo Labo.

While the main focus point of the Acer Aspire Vero may be its PCR plastic build, under the hood it carries some fairly respectable specs. There’s two main variants of the laptop, with the base model coming with an Intel Core i5-1155G7 while the higher spec one has an Intel Core i7-1195G7. Those aren’t typos either; these are the higher clocked versions of the more common i5-1135G7 and i7-1165G7 mobile CPUs. While the Core i7 model comes with 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM, the Core i5 will only have 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM onboard, though it’s upgradable to 16GB with normal DDR4 RAM. Both will come with a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and graphics are handled by the integrated Intel Iris Xe iGPU.

As for the display, you’re getting a 15.6-inch, IPS display with a Full HD resolution. It doesn’t have the thinnest bezels in the world, but it’s safe to say that wasn’t the priority here. Weighing in at 1.8kh, the Acer Aspire Vero has a thickness of 17.9mm. Keeping the lights on is a 48Whr battery that Acer claims will last you up to seven hours, and perhaps to help you meet that there’s four performance modes that you can choose in the settings: Performance, Balanced, Eco and Eco+ for when you really only need the most basic of computing power.

Other features of note include support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, an Ethernet port, a HDMI 2.0 port, two USB-A 3.2 ports, a USB-C 3.2 port, a fingerprint scanner and a 3.5mm audio jack. There’s also the R and E keys’ legends being mirrored, which Acer says is to ‘reinforce the crucial message’ of being sustainable. You’ll see standard screws being used here too, to make it easy for upgrades and repairs to be done, ostensibly a way to reduce e-waste down the road. Acer states that doing so won’t void your warranty either—assuming you did it correctly that is. The Aspire Vero also comes with Windows 11 out of the box.

Pricing and availability

The Acer Aspire Vero starts at RM3,399 for the Intel Core i5 model, while the higher spec Intel Core i7 model will retail for RM4,299. You can already pre-order the Acer Aspire Vero, but you might want to wait until 11.11 as from then till the 19th of November, purchasing the laptop will entitle you to free gifts such as a backpack, a wireless headset, Touch ‘n Go eWallet credit and more. It’ll be on sale on the Acer Malaysia online store, the Acer Official Store on Shopee and Lazada as well as retail stores nationwide.

Going off on a tangent for a bit, the opening of the local launch event for the Acer Aspire Vero was held in Taman Tugu deep in Kuala Lumpur, and for good reason. As part of Acer Malaysia’s ‘Make Your Green Mark’ initiative, they had adopted 15 trees in Taman Tugu and for every Aspire Vero purchased from now till the 19th, Acer Malaysia will channel a further RM100 to fund more tree adoptions, with the goal of adopting another 15 trees.
