Teardown reveals AirPods 3’s battery is 33% smaller than the Pro, despite longer battery life

After the recent announcement for the AirPods 3, many people started calling it an AirPods Pro without ear tips. Although the AirPods 3 does not have ANC or transparency mode, the external design looks quite similar to the AirPods Pro. This caused many to wonder what the internal differences are between these two models.

In a new teardown video posted by 52audio, we can see exactly what goes on inside the AirPods 3.

After taking apart the charging case, you can see the magnets used for MagSafe charging, which is the first appearance of this in any AirPods model. Also in the charging case is one 345mAh battery, which has a much smaller capacity compared to the AirPods Pro case’s two batteries, adding up to 519mAh. This means that the AirPods 3 case has 33% less battery capacity than the AirPods Pro case.

Inside the earpieces themselves is Apple’s new skin detection sensor, which the current AirPods Pro does not have. Along with the speaker and microphones, there is a 133Mwh battery on each earpiece. This is quite interesting, as the AirPods 3 offers six hours of listening time, while the AirPods Pro’s bigger 160 Mwh battery only offers five hours with ANC off.

With the charging case included, the AirPods Pro provides 24 hours of listening time, but the AirPods 3 gives you 30 hours, despite the smaller battery capacity. We are not sure why this is the case, but it might have something to do with power efficiency or simply different drivers in the models.

This new third-generation AirPods now has spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, adaptive EQ, and a clearer sound output compared to the previous generation model. If you want to see the internal hardware in more detail, you can watch the full teardown video here.

The AirPods 3 is officially priced at RM829 in Malaysia. However, the AirPods Pro is retailing for RM1,099 and often go for less than RM900 during mega sales, so keep that in mind if you decide to get a pair soon.
