Grab enhances GrabPay with new privacy and security features to make your online payments safer

This post is brought to you by Grab.

Grab has recently introduced new safety and security features for their in-app eWallet, GrabPay. The new features will let users perform real-time digital transactions with added safety measures, including requiring a two-factor authentication (2FA) method and added biometric authentication.

“We prioritise our users’ data privacy and information protection across all our financial services and platform. Against the backdrop of the steep growth of real-time digital payments among Malaysians this past year, we have continued to innovate our services to better serve the digital financial needs of our consumers and merchants,” said Priyanka Madan, Head of GrabPay, GrabMalaysia.

According to Grab, there has been an increase when it comes to digital payments in Malaysia. 62% of consumers preferred using eWallets and 52% of consumers preferred using real-time payments. With more users relying on GrabPay for online transactions, this is what they added to give users a better peace of mind.

2FA and Biometrics Authentication

2FA, or two-factor authentication, requires two forms of identification in order to access your information — either through password or PIN, or biometrics. Adding this additional security layer makes it much harder for hackers to break into your accounts — especially if you opt to use biometrics.

The 2FA method has already been an existing feature. But since it wasn’t a requirement before, users might not have known about the added safety measure.

Now, all GrabPay users are required to set-up the two-factor authentication method. They can also enable biometric authentication via fingerprint or Face ID—depending on if your phone has that feature.

To enable biometric authentication, find Settings in the Grab app (iOS, Android). You can then select “Face ID Authentication” or “Fingerprint Authentication” under Security. You’re also able to update your PIN number and recovery methods for the 2FA method.

Besides these new additions, GrabPay also has these safety features that have been a part of their service.

Data Fraud Protection

GrabPay is integrated with a 24/7 fraud detection engine, which means that it can help prevent and detect fraud and stop unauthorised transactions. If unauthorised transactions have been identified, Grab will decline the transaction to protect your interest.

However, if you suspect that your account is showing unauthorised activity, you can report it to Grab here

Privacy and Security

As one of their safety measures, all personal information—including payments and credit card information of GrabPay’s users—are protected and will not be shared or used externally. This means that you don’t have to worry about the safety of your credit card details in the Grab app.

GrabPay’s data security is also compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)—and it is the highest standard of security for payments. According to Grab, they apply “the most stringent standards when storing, transmitting, and processing your data”.

Strong Customer Support

Customers can reach out to Grab’s customer support through the app for immediate assistance. Users can visit the Help Centre under their Settings to call or chat with the customer support service.

Grab’s Help Centre is designed to educate customers about GrabPay. Users are also able to find solutions to their concerns, like if you need help with GrabPay’s payment system, or if you don’t recognise a charge.

Regulated by the Government

GrabPay is officially regulated under both the government and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). It was also selected as the only non-government linked e-wallet to support the government’s ePenjana program in 2020.

Additionally, when you put money in your GrabPay wallet, it’s transferred into a dedicated customer account—stored and protected by their global bank partners.
