Google will be launching the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on 19 Oct

Having first teased it back at the start of August, we finally have a launch date for Google’s Pixel 6 lineup. According to a tweet from the official Made by Google Twitter account, the new Google Phone will be coming on the 19th of October, 10am, which would be 20th of October, 1am local time.

There’s also now a page for the Pixel launch event up. It gives a few more details about the event, stating that it’s a pre-recorded livestream and that anyone can watch it when it happens. You can also use the ‘Add to Calendar’ function on the event page to save it to your Google Calendar.

The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is set to be some of the most exciting smartphones Google have launched perhaps since the original Pixel. This is in large part due to them ditching Qualcomm altogether, instead teaming up with Samsung to come up with the Google Tensor system-on-chip. The Tensor chip is claimed to have more machine learning and AI processing than any other mobile SoC before, with Samsung helping them out on the technical know-how of designing a mobile processor.

We can also expect more of Google’s leading photography. With the Tensor chip helping out in postprocessing, the cameras themselves are housed in a raised, horizontal camera bump across the upper back of the device. The Pixel 6 will have a main sensor, rumoured to be a 50MP shooter, along with an ultrawide lens, while the Pixel 6 Pro would get a third telephoto lens capable of 4X optical zoom via periscope technology for little to no loss of image quality.

Unfortunately though, it looks like Malaysians won’t be able to get it—officially anyway. Google Pixel devices have so far not been made available for purchase here, with the closest option now being our Singaporean neighbours down south. Nevertheless, the Pixel 6 and the accompanying Tensor chip marks an exciting time for Google and tech enthusiasts in general.
