Asus Malaysia is launching the ROG Phone 5s series this coming Friday, 8th October 2021. This is their latest gaming smartphone that’s powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888+ processor.

To catch the Malaysian launch, you can tune in to their live stream which is happening at 9pm on 8th October. It’s happening on the Asus ROG Malaysia Facebook page. So far there are no pricing and availability details yet, but we are guessing that pre-orders may start during the upcoming 10.10 sale on Sunday.

ROG Phone 5s

In terms of specs, the ROG Phone 5s is basically a refreshed of the ROG Phone 5 that was launched about 6 months ago. It comes with a 6.78″ Full HD+ AMOLED display that pushes a fluid 144Hz refresh rate. For better responsiveness, the new model boasts a higher 360Hz touch-sampling rate (ROG Phone 5: 300Hz) and a slightly quicker 24ms touch latency (ROG Phone 5: 24.3ms). The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and features an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Under the hood, the Snapdragon 888 is swapped for a newer 888+ processor. This time, the base model can be equipped with up to 18GB of RAM and up to 512GB of non-expandable storage. For taking pictures, it gets a triple-camera setup that consists of a 64MP main camera, 13MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 5MP macro lens. Also included is a 24MP front camera.

As usual, the gaming phone still gets a pair of front-facing stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The ROG Phone 5s still features AirTrigger shoulder buttons and there’s also Aura RGB lightning for its ROG Logo on the rear. Powering the device is a large 6,000mAh battery and it has two USB-C ports for charging. It can support 65W HyperCharge where a full charge can be achieved in less than an hour.

ROG Phone 5s Pro

The ROG Phone 5s Pro may sound like a higher-spec model but it has identical hardware as the regular 5s. It also gets the same 6.78″ Full HD+ AMOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate, triple-camera setup and a large 6,000mAh battery. It is also powered by the same Snapdragon 888+ with up to 18GB of RAM.

The biggest difference is on the rear of the ROG Phone 5s Pro. Instead of the dot-matrix RGB logo, the Pro model gets ROG Vision which is a small screen that can display various animations that can be customised for different notifications. In addition to the AirTrigger shoulder buttons and motion controls, the 5s Pro also gets hidden rear touch sensors that work as L2/R2 trigger functions for your games.

In Taiwan, the ROG Phone 5s starts from TWD 29,990 (about RM4,492) for the 16GB RAM + 256GB storage model and TWD 37,990 (about RM5,692) for the 18GB RAM + 512GB storage option. As a comparison, the previous ROG Phone 5 starts from RM2,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model, while the top-of-the-line ROG Phone 5 Ultimate with 18GB RAM + 512GB storage was launched at RM4,999.
