After announcing plans to expand to video games, Netflix acquires its first game studio

You might have heard that Netflix has plans to offer video games beyond their collection of TV shows and films. Now, the streaming service company has announced the acquisition of its first game studio—Night School Studio—and said that they are “in the early stages of creating a great gaming experience”.

I’m very excited about this, as I’m a huge fan of the games released by Night School Studio. Their most well known game—Oxenfree-–still lingers in my mind because of its strong storyline and well developed characters. Gizmodo also pointed out that the game’s storyline is “vaguely” resembles Netflix’s Stranger Things, as they are both a “supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift”.

“We’re inspired by their bold mission to set a new bar for storytelling in games. Their commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together,” said Mike Verdu, VP of Game Development in Netflix.

Night School also made their own announcement, saying that Netflix will give game makers “an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people”. They also said that they will “keep making Oxenfree II”—something me and the rest of their fans are anticipating.

Currently, Netflix’s library of mobile games are only available in a few countries for now—including Spain and Italy for Android, following an initial rollout in Poland. Their games include Stranger Things 1984 and Stranger Things 3.
