Why is the chair emoji trending on TikTok and Twitter?

If you’re still using the cry laughing emoji to express laughter, then get out from that rock you’ve been living under and get with the times. The internet has switched over to the chair emoji, and it’s everywhere.

If you look at the comment section of any viral TikTok or tweet, you’re bound to see a chair emoji somewhere. Even brands like Xbox and the infamous Among Us game have posted about it.

The origin of this usage of the chair emoji was hotly debated, with many claiming it has a hidden inappropriate meaning or came from a YouTuber. The actual origin is actually both anti-climactic and inspiring.

TikTok user Anthony Mai, who goes by @blank.antho, planned for this to be a viral joke from the start. On the 8th of August, he posted a video asking everyone to replace the laughing emoji with the chair emoji. He then asks people to change their profile photo to a picture of his cardboard cutout of Obama, and lastly asks his followers to ‘raid’ (spam comments on) KSI’s profile.

KSI then proceeded to go along with the inside joke, blowing the trend up with his 7.9 million followers on the platform. It’s gotten so big that even TikTok themselves posted about the trend. That posted has already gotten 1.2 million views in just three days.

Unfortunately, the Obama picture seemed to have gotten lost throughout the process, but this is still a huge success for Anthony Mai. He has tried to make viral inside jokes before, but none have reached this level of virality.

The chair emoji has even extended to other platforms like Twitter, but many people are still confused about why the chair emoji was specifically chosen. As Larry the Cucumber from Veggietales once said, “In the future, entertainment will be randomly generated”, and “It’s funny because it’s unexpected.”
