Xiaomi shows off its Mission Impossible-inspired smart glasses that come with a microLED display

I’m guessing that Smart Glasses will truly try to be a thing in the near future, with the release of the Ray-Bans Stories and a new generation of Snapchat Spectacles, as well as others. Xiaomi is also coming out with this own, but theirs has a Mission Impossible themed twist to it—“advanced microLED optical waveguide technology” for lens display. And honestly? That’s pretty tight.

At the first glance, the glasses look pretty dorky. The classic black frames remind me of the generic pocket protector AV nerd in American high schools—and while it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it didn’t make the model wearing it look that sophisticated so imagine the look on average Joes.

But it really isn’t the look of it that is the cool part—although it would make me think twice about purchasing them. The Xiaomi Smart Glasses are able to let you take calls, take photos, and even navigate to your chosen location and translate things right through the lenses.

“At its core is a 0.13 inch microLED display, smaller than a grain of rice, and light output is as high as 2 million nits. Through reflection and diffusion of the optical waveguide lens, a much larger display is offered to the eye,” said Xiaomi in their video.

The lens display seems to promise to display information on your lens like in something like the Matrix or Mission Impossible. In fact, almost exactly like in Mission Impossible. But admittedly, the one on Tom Cruise is a cooler pair of sunglasses so we’re about halfway there.

Just today, I reported on the Ray-Bans Stories, a collaboration between the sunglasses company and Facebook. I thought it was a bit of a lousy idea, considering the fact that they are very similar to the unpopular Snapchat Spectacles. But with the introduction of the Xiaomi Smart Glasses—as well as other ones by Bose and Huawei—I might get a case of FOMO and get a pair myself someday.
