Finally, MySejahtera’s biggest design flaw will be fixed in the next update

MySejahtera is Malaysia’s default contact tracing app which is also used to verify a person’s health and proof of vaccination. Despite its recent update for its vaccine certificate, we all have to agree that the app is still terrible when it comes to user experience. To comply with the current SOP, one has to show their health status, show their vaccine certificate, and then switch to another tab just to check-in. Thankfully, a new major update is coming very soon which will finally address all of these design problems.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has tweeted that a new build of MySejahtera will be pushed tonight which will make it easier for everyone to display their COVID-19 risk level and vaccination status on a single page. Instead of navigating around the different sections of the app, all you’ll need is to show the Check-in page. If all is ok, you can proceed to check in from the same page. This will definitely speed up checks at premises for both the staff as well as visitors.

Redesigned Check-in page

Above is a sample screenshot of a low-risk individual that has been fully vaccinated. The status is displayed clearly and presumably, the fully vaccinated status is only given to those who have fulfilled the required waiting period after receiving their vaccine shot.

For those who have received a two-dose vaccine such as Pfizer, Sinovac or AstraZeneca, you are only considered fully vaccinated 14 days after receiving the second shot. Meanwhile, for those who receive a single-shot vaccine such as CanSino or Johnson & Johnson, you’re only counted as fully vaccinated 28 days after getting the injection.

For individuals who are considered high-risk or are not vaccinated yet, the status will be displayed prominently on the check-in page as shown above.

Check-out button

Another interesting update is the additional check-out button after you’ve checked-in. This will help in narrowing down contact tracing as the system will know exactly when you left the premises. This could potentially reduce the number of people being falsely flagged as “casual contact” when a positive case was detected at a location during a specific duration.

According to Khairy, a user can check-out by simply tapping on a button and there’s no need to scan another QR code. If you forget to checkout, we reckon that MySejahtera should be smart enough to “check-out” automatically when you scan a different QR code.

These are certainly the best updates we’ve seen so far for MySejahtera. The new interface is definitely a huge improvement that will make things easier for non-tech savvy users as well as security guards at shopping malls and high-traffic areas. MySejahtera is available on Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery.
