WhatsApp is releasing its iPad app very soon and it’ll work while your phone is offline

According to @WABetaInfo, a news portal for WhatsApp-related news, WhatsApp is currently working on multi-device 2.0. The new version of the feature will let users use an iPad as a new linked device, which will still be usable if your phone runs out of battery.

In their tweet, WABetaInfo shared screencaps of what WhatsApp is currently working on—a “Multi-Device” section. In the screencaps, users will be able to link up to four devices that you can access WhatsApp with, without needing to keep your own phone online.

“Multi-device means that users will have the same functionality that is available on the current public versions of WhatsApp Web, Desktop and Portal, just without the need to have your phone connected. Our multi-device capability immediately makes the experience better for people who use Desktop/Web and Portal. And it also will make it possible to add support for more kinds of devices over time,” explained a WhatsApp spokesperson.

WhatsApp also said that this upcoming addition will be its own native app, as it will work independantly from your phone. Those who are testing WhatsApp beta will be able to use the app on a tablet in a future update.

This feature will definitely be useful, and is highly anticipated. Being able to access WhatsApp as a form of communication through another device like an iPad or another tablet might save us from being cut off from our friends and family completely if our phones run out of juice.

WhatsApp has also been testing out messages that automatically disappear after 90 days. Beta users are able to test out the option themselves. Additonally, WhatsApp is finally allowing users to move their chat history between Android and iOS devices. The feature was rolled out first to the latest Samsung Galaxy foldable phones a couple of weeks ago, and it is also currently available for the iPhone.
