COVID-19: Record-high 22,948 new cases today, Sabah and Kedah record over 2,000 cases each

After reporting 22,242 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, Malaysia has hit a new record high of 22,948 new cases today. This brings the total number of cases to 1,489,460 since the start of the pandemic. In August so far, there are 376,188 cases reported which is an average of 19,799 cases per day.

The Ministry of Health has reported 178 deaths today, which is the lowest since 7th August. This brings the total death toll to 13,480. In August so far, there are 4,456 deaths, which is an average of 234.5 per day.

21,720 recoveries have been reported today and a total of 1,220,446 patients have recovered and been discharged so far. There are currently 255,534 active cases remaining with 1,060 in ICU and 528 requiring ventilators.

According to the breakdown, Selangor still tops the list with 7,175 new cases, followed by Sabah with 2,583 cases, Kedah with 2,137 cases, Penang with 1,655 cases and Johor with 1,526 cases. The states of Sabah, Kelantan and Kedah have one of the lowest vaccination rates with less than 40% of their population having a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of 18th August 2021.

There are 42 new COVID-19 clusters identified today and 23 are workplace-related. Below is the breakdown of the number of new clusters by state:

Over 98% of total new cases today are from category 1 and 2 where individuals exhibit little or no symptoms. Out of 22,948 cases, 17,981 (78.35%) are from people who have not been fully vaccinated.
