Qualcomm’s Snapdragon system-on-chips (SoC) have over the years proved themselves to be among the best SoCs for Android devices. But with the recent rise of Apple’s A-series chips and Samsung set to unleash the Exynos 2200 SoC with an AMD GPU on it, Qualcomm can’t rest on their laurels. Indeed, reports suggest that the next generation flagship Snapdragon SoC will see Qualcomm feature some big GPU gains.
While there’s been rumours already of a Snapdragon 888 Plus, it is understood that its model number is SM8350+. The next generation SoC in question however is the SM8450, and according to serial leaker Evan Blass, we can expect the usual jump in CPU performance from the SM8450 chip. The shocker however is the jump from Adreno 660 to the Adreno 730 for its GPU.
Typically, the increase in the naming scheme for the Adreno GPUs bring with it a performance boost relative to the increase in numbers too. For instance, the Snapdragon 845’s graphics performance greatly surpassed that of the Snapdragon 835 thanks to its Adreno 630, compared to its predecessor’s Adreno 540. As such, there is some possibility that the Adreno 730 GPU implies another big overhaul in terms of graphics performance.
The other specifications of the SM8450 indicate further improvements. Built on a 4nm process, it’s alleged to come with a X65 5G modem and a Spectra 680 image signal processor, which would be upgrades from the Snapdragon 888’s X60 modem and Spectra 580. Other specs of note from the leak include an Adreno 1195 display processing unit, an Adreno 665 video processing unit as well as 1GHz mmWave downlink and 400MHz Sub-6 support.
As of now though, they remain nothing more than speculation, and if anything we expect the Snapdragon 888+ to make an appearance first.
