I have two cats, and one of them is already getting a little old—and I have to be prepared to fork out some serious bucks for his medical fees more often. But that won’t need to matter as much if I invest in Oyen—the digital-first health insurance for pets in Malaysia partnering with MSIG.
Oyen’s “digital-first” platform lets you to buy and manage medical insurance for their cats and dogs online. With the insurance, you can get vet medical benefits of up to RM8,000 for surgical, medication, diagnosis costs and more from only RM25 per month.
Oyen is basically banking on young working adults who have recently adopted pets during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the UK, 3.2 million households in the UK have acquired a pet since the start of the pandemic. However, more dogs are being abandoned as people struggle with reduced financial circumstances around the same time—so an insurance plan to help save money during vet visits could lessen those numbers.
“More people are now working from home and increasingly look to pets to provide companionship and help manage their stress. Many of these new pet owners are first-timers and often millennials, who are more digitally savvy,” said Kevin Hoong, Oyen Founder & CEO.
Cats
There are three different pricing tables for both cats and dogs. For cats, there’s Cat Basic, Cat Plus and Cat Champion. Cat Basic—which costs RM25 a month or RM299 a year—gets you the vet medical limit of RM3,500, including surgical fees, consultation fees, diagnosis/blood test, clinic overnight stay for 3 mights, prescribed medication, x-ray/ultrasound, follow up treatment, and a 90% medical reimbursement rate.
Cat Plus—which costs RM33 a month or RM399 a year—gets you all of the above as well as follow up treatment for up to 60 days, no cap for clinic overnight stays, a burial cost cover of up to RM500, and third party injury/damage of up to RM10,000. You will also get the vet medical limit of RM5,000.
Cat Champion—which costs RM42 a month or RM499—gets you all of the above as well as a burial cost cover of up to RM1,000, and third party injury/damage of up to RM30,000. You will also get the vet medical limit of RM8,000.
Dogs
For dogs, they also have three different pricing tables but they’re slightly more expensive. A microchip is also required within 7 days of insurance purchase. The Dog Basic costs RM499 a year or RM42 a month, the Dog Plus costs RM649 a year or RM54 a month, and the Dog Champion costs RM799 a year or RM67 a month.
