Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2 to get water resistance rating but…

Foldable smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip are pretty cool as it comes with a screen that can fold. However, unlike most flagship smartphones, these foldable devices are quite fragile and they don’t come with any form of splash or water resistance. According to a report by Sammobile, it appears that the Korean smartphone maker would finally get an ingress protection (IP) rating for its upcoming foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 2.

From the looks of it, it looks like Samsung may potentially offer water and dust resistance for this year’s foldable smartphones. The move would address durability concerns especially when it comes to accidental spills and usage outdoors under the rain.

Realistically, we don’t expect the new Fold and Flip models to come with IP68 rating like its candybar Galaxy S21 and Note 20 series. An IP68 device have been tested for submersion over a metre deep for up to 30 minutes. Besides water, dust resistance is also something that manufacturers would need to address as tiny particles and debris may cause some serious damage to the phone’s hinge.

It is also worth pointing out that an IP rating doesn’t necessary guarantee water resistance. In the worse case scenario, the devices could be given a low rating of IP53 just like Redmi Note 10 Pro or the base model Huawei P40. IP53 basically means that the device has been tested for water spray up to 60 degree angle from vertical for 5 minutes. The rating also means it has some form of dust protection but it isn’t dust-tight like a typical IP67 or IP68 rated device.

While Samsung is heading to the right direction with an IP rating, we don’t think you would want to bring the next Z Fold device to a pool party just yet. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

In case you missed it, Samsung Malaysia has announced a price cut for its current foldable devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 (5G) is now going for RM6,999 while the Galaxy Z Flip (LTE) can be yours for RM3,999.
