Genesis breaks the Guinness World Record with 3,281 drones during China launch

Genesis, in case you are unfamiliar, is the luxury car arm of South Korean automotive giants, Hyundai. On the 29th of March 2021, the company announced the opening of operations in China, and to mark the occasion, it commissioned 3,281 drones to soar through the skies (and advertise the Genesis logo, of course). In doing so, the company broke the Guinness World record for the most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.

This isn’t the first time we’re seeing drone shows involved as PR showcases, and Genesis clearly knew what it was doing when breaking the previous record. This was held by Shenzhen Damoda Intelligent Control Technology, who reportedly flew 3,051 drones last year during an event, while Intel has also gotten involved in the past with a drone show of their own.

As drone technology continues to evolve, I fully expect to see Genesis’ newly-acquired world record to be usurped at some point in the short-to-long-term future.

Genesis Motor China’s CEO, Markus Henne, said:

“At the heart of the Genesis promise is the daring spirit to do things differently. Our first-ever moment in China was a special opportunity to engage with our audience and show what Genesis is about. With this record-breaking drone performance, we brought our brand story and philosophy to life for many Chinese consumers. Soon, we will bring even more inspiring Genesis experiences and products to the consumers in China.”

All of that aside, drone shows are a true spectacle to watch. Thanks to the ongoing development of drone technologies, the UAVs are able to fly in coordinated sequences (which obviously came in handy when displaying the Genesis logo). The drones are probably programmed with some sort of a software to choreograph the show, and it’s pretty amazing to see thousands of drones swarm about—with a purpose.

In any case, what do you think? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
