PayNet: GrabPay target to support DuitNow QR this month

GrabPay users will soon be able to make cashless payments at all merchants that display the DuitNow QR code. PayNet’s Director for Retail Payments Services, Khairuan Abdul Rahman, told us during an interview that GrabPay is aiming to support the national QR code standard in April 2021.

With DuitNow QR, businesses will only need to show one QR code on the counter to accept payments from different eWallet and online banking platforms. As a result, there’s no longer a need to show several QR codes from different platforms, and this would reduce confusion and clutter. With Grab on board, DuitNow QR will cover Malaysia’s top 3 eWallet players which also include Boost and Touch ‘n Go eWallet.

Once enabled, GrabPay users can pay by scanning the DuitNow QR code, enter the transaction amount and confirm the transaction. Although the DuitNow QR standee may carry different eWallet or bank branding as shown above, you can still scan it if your eWallet or banking app supports DuitNow QR. Just look out for the DuitNow QR logo and the pink QR code.

ShopeePay is the first eWallet player to support DuitNow QR in December 2020, followed by Touch ‘n Go eWallet and Boost in March 2021. AirAsia’s BigPay has recently announced that it will support DuitNow QR in Q2 2021.

Besides the eWallet players, DuitNow QR is also supported by most banks which include Alliance Bank, AmBank, Bank Islam, Hong Leong Bank, MayBank, Public Bank, RHB and more.

Merchants can start accepting payments via DuitNow QR by displaying the pink QR code. The banks and eWallet providers will conduct an onboarding process to convert existing QR codes or alternatively, the merchant themselves can generate the DuitNow QR code from the respective Merchant app. The benefit for merchants is that they would only need to maintain one acquirer account to accept QR transactions. This simplifies their operations especially for small businesses as they would only need to refer to one statement to view all QR-code transactions.
