COVID-19: 1,178 new cases today, Sarawak and Selangor both record over 200 cases

Malaysia has recorded 1,178 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 346,678. There are 6 new deaths reported and the death toll is now 1,278.

The Ministry of Health has reported 1,377 new recoveries and a total of 331,001 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is now 95.48% while the mortality rate is at 0.37%.

There are currently 14,399 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 163 are in ICU while 81 require respiratory support.

Out of the 1,178 new cases today, 20 are imported while 1,158 are transmitted locally. Sarawak recorded the most today with 238 new cases, followed by Selangor with 237 cases, Pulau Pinang with 190 cases and Johor with 165 cases.

The Ministry of Health has also confirmed that 9 local COVID-19 cases were infected with the South African B.1.351 strain. The variant was discovered as a result of a genomic surveillance strategy involving positive samples from January until March 2021. This include positive cases from local clusters in Selangor, Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak.
