Zoom Escaper lets you fake a bad connection and a crying baby to help get you out of a meeting

There’s a few TikToks that give you “audio” of a lagging connection that you can use during a Zoom call that you would rather get out of. But artist Sam Lavigne created the Zoom Escaper—which makes the feature more convenient.

Zoom Escaper is a free web widget that lets you add several fake audio effects to the next Zoom Call you want to ditch. The audio effects include “bad connection”, “echo”, “upset baby”, “man weeping”, “wind”, “dogs”, “construction” and even “urination”.

Here’s how to use Zoom Escaper for yourself.

  • Visit zoomescaper.com
  • Install VB-Cable—a virtual audio device working as virtual audio cable
  • Go back to zoomescaper.com and refresh the page
  • Hit the start button and play with the sounds
  • Switch the Output on this page to “VB-Cable”
  • Open up Zoom
  • Set microphone in Zoom to “VB-Cable”
  • Enjoy giving the other people in the Zoom meeting a hard time

Take note that during your Zoom call, you won’t be able to hear the audio interference applied to your voice. But you will know it works by the reactions of everyone else.

The wildest sound effect on the Zoom Escaper is the “man weeping” sound. I don’t know how useful it is to have the literal sound of a man weeping, but the option is there regardless. You can even add your own mp3 file for your own sound.

If you’d rather have something more blatant, Lavigne also created something called the Zoom Deleter. The program continually checks for the presence of Zoom on your computer, and—hilariously—immediately deletes it if it’s found.
