Khairy delivers a message in Mandarin after receiving Sinovac vaccine

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin, is the first person in Malaysia to receive the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine. He receive his first dose at his constituency in Hospital Rembau.

The first batch of 100,000 doses of the finished Sinovac vaccines have arrived from China earlier this week and another batch of 100,000 doses are expected to arrive soon. These are different from the bulk vaccines that will be fill-finished locally by Pharmaniaga.

Khairy had joked earlier that he would be fluent in Mandarin by the third week of March. Shortly after receiving his jab, someone had tweeted to him asking if his Mandarin had improved.

A few hours later, Khairy had posted a video on Twitter speaking in Mandarin to say that the Sinovac vaccines are safe and he felt good. He joked that his Mandarin has suddenly improved before emphasing that no matter what vaccines are available, it is safe to be used. He also urged everyone to fight the virus together and to protect ourselves and the community.

Sinovac is the second vaccine to be administered in Malaysia. It’s based on an inactivated virus and it has a shorter 14-day interval between the two doses. Apart from Khairy, other 10 frontliners have also received their first dose of the Sinovac vaccine.

Meanwhile, the early batch of individuals that have received the first dose of Pfizer vaccines have started to receive their second dose after 21 days. The Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham have completed their vaccination protocol yesterday.

Meanwhile, Dr Adham Baba and other frontliners have also received their second dose today at Putrajaya. Individuals that have received the required two doses will be given a My COVID-19 vaccination badge and a digital certificate in MySejahtera.

As of yesterday, a total of 367,213 people have received their first dose in Malaysia. Selangor recorded the most vaccination with 45,854 people, followed by Sabah with 36,443 people and Sarawak with 32,665 people.

In terms of registrations, a total of 5.8 million individuals have signed up so far. If you haven’t register for the vaccine, you can do so via MySejahtera, via the official website at vaksincovid.gov.my or call-in at 1-800-888-828.
