The second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year has just concluded, and we have a bunch of new tantalising options in the mid-range market—the Samsung Galaxy A32, A52, and A72. There are LTE and 5G variants of the A32 and A52, but strangely enough, Samsung is only releasing a 4G version of the range-topping A72 for the global market.
In any case, this means that we have five new smartphones to cover today. However, not every model will be available in Malaysia—not yet, anyway. Here’s everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy A32, A52 and A72.
Samsung Galaxy A32
The Galaxy A32 is the most affordable option in the 2021 A-series, as per its name. Samsung has clearly put a lot of effort into cramming a number of higher-end specs into its budget A-series device, including a 6.4″ FHD+ Super AMOLED display pushing a refresh rate of 90Hz, with brightness of up to 800nits.
Under the hood, the Galaxy A32 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G80 chipset. This is mated to 8GB of RAM, and you get 128GB of onboard storage—which can be expanded via microSD up to 1TB. To sustain the device, you get a 5,000mAh battery which can be charged at up to 15W with Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging technology.
The Samsung Galaxy A32 comes equipped with a quad-camera setup on the back of the phone for photography. This is made up of a main 64MP camera with an f/1.8 aperture, along with an 8MP ultra-wide f/2.2 camera, and twin 5MP f/2.4 shooters for depth sensing and macro photography. Up top, a 20MP f/2.2 camera sits in a u-shaped notch on the display.
Finally, Samsung promises that the Galaxy A32 supports Android 11-based One UI 3. There are four colour options you can choose from: Awesome Violet, Awesome Black, Awesome Blue, and Awesome White. Samsung Malaysia has confirmed both the LTE-only and 5G versions of the Galaxy A32 will be coming to Malaysia. No pricing details were announced during the Unpacked event, but we’re in the process of attaining the official pricing information.
Samsung Galaxy A32 5G
The Galaxy A32 5G, on the other hand, is a wholly different phone. Here, you’re looking at a 6.5″ TFT LCD display pushing a measly HD+ resolution of 720×1600 pixels. The quad-camera setup is also markedly different, comprising of a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP shooter for macro shots, and a 2MP lens for depth sensing.
Under the hood, a an octa-core processor powers the Galaxy A32 5G, and you get a single variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Just like the LTE-only version, you’ll be able to expand storage via microSD up to 1TB. There’s also an identically-sized 5,000mAh battery to sustain the device, while the device supports up to 15W of Adaptive Fast Charging.
Colour options are made up of Awesome Black, Awesome Blue, Awesome Violet, and Awesome White. As mentioned, the Galaxy A32 5G has been confirmed to be coming to Malaysia.
Samsung Galaxy A52 & A72
Moving up a rung, the Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 are very, very similar devices. It’s a Snapdragon 720G for both models, and you even get the same memory configurations of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of (expandable) storage. You also get 90Hz refresh rates on both displays, with the A52 using a 6.5″ FHD+ Super AMOLED display, while the A72 comes with a 6.7″ FHD+ Super AMOLED display. Plus, Samsung has equipped both models here with Harman Kardon-tuned stereo speakers.
The A72 also comes with a larger 5,000mAh battery compared to the A52’s 4,500mAh battery, and both devices can be charged at up to 25W via USB-C. However, you should note that the A52 only comes with a 15W charger in the box; the A72 comes with a 25W brick bundled in. Both models—unlike the cheaper A32—come with support for Samsung Pay, which is certainly a big benefit.
Other specs that are shared between models include IP67 water resistance, and even most of the cameras: the 64MP f/1.8 wide camera, 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, and a 5MP macro shooter. However, there’s a significant upgrade for the Galaxy A72, which uses an 8MP telephoto shooter that offers 3x optical zoom (for the first time on an A-series phone). On the other hand, the Galaxy A52 comes with a 5MP depth sensor instead of the telephoto lens.
On the software side of things, the Galaxy A52 and A72 run on Android 11-based One UI 3. Official global pricing starts from:
Samsung Galaxy A52 – EUR 349 (~RM1,713)
Samsung Galaxy A52 5G – EUR 429 (~RM2,107)
Samsung Galaxy A72 – EUR 449 (~RM2,204)
There is also a 5G version of the Galaxy A52 which features a 120Hz refresh rate, although strangely, there is no Galaxy A72 5G. For now, Samsung has confirmed that only the LTE versions of the Galaxy A52, and A72 will be officially available in Malaysia, and we’ll be seeing the Galaxy A32 5G hit Malaysian shelves alongside the LTE model soon. We don’t have official Malaysian pricing just yet, but keep SoyaCincau.com to keep abreast of the latest developments on this.
