Samsung has just announced its 2021 range of QLED TVs, and they come with some serious upgrades that will help to “redefine the role of television in consumer homes”, as the Korean company puts it. Among the accessibility-focused features that are available on Samsung’s 2021 lineup are modes that will help those who may have hearing or vision impairments, while Samsung is also continuing to expand its Voice guide feature, as well as other AI-based functionalities.
And now, the company has announced a new type of display technology on its latest TVs: Neo QLED. There are two new models that use this tech—the flagship 8K QN900A and the 4K QN90A models. Here are 5 factors that make Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs pretty special.
Samsung promises that the new and enhanced Neo Quantum Processor 8K can improve “everything you watch”, thanks to its upscaling capabilities—up to 8K resolution on compatible models, of course. Deep learning algorithms also adapt to your viewing environment, and adjust your viewing conditions accordingly—improving movies, shows, and even video games in real-time.
This means that whatever the resolution of the input quality, the Neo Quantum Processor can optimise the output video to 4K and 8K by using 16 neural network models (each trained in AI upscaling and deep learning).
Essentially, the Neo QLED 8K TVs have integrated Quantum Matrix Technology to control the Quantum Mini LED display panel. This panel uses incredibly thin micro layers with many more LEDs to disperse light, and the Quantum Mini LED is 1/40 the height of a conventional LED panel.
Samsung’s Quantum Matrix Technology Pro ensures ultra-fine and precise control of these packed LEDs, to prevent blooming. Blooming is basically when brighter areas bleed into darker ones, which can then lighten the black levels that you see on the display. Samsung’s Quantum Matrix Technology Pro prevents this, and allows viewers to enjoy content as it’s meant to be seen on-screen.
According to Samsung, viewers get a more “precise and immersive” HDR experience, and 12 bits of contrast levels offer the “ultimate contrast”, along with “amazingly real pictures”.
The Samsung Neo QLED TVs also offer a rich viewing experience, thanks to “spectacularly vivid colour”. A large part of this is down to the use of Samsung’s Quantum HDR 64X technology, which works in tandem with the HDR10+ standard to produce true-to-life images by optimising colours and contrasts for each individual scene.
You also get real 8K resolution on the QN900A, the flagship model in the range. 33 million pixels combine to offer an incredible, industry-leading 8K resolution—the only challenge is to find genuine, 8K content to begin with. Popular services like YouTube already support 8K content, of course, but you can also rely on the TV’s built-in AI Upscaling capabilities to transform your favourite movies into 8K.
And your movies or videos will be displayed in a billion shades of colour, too, with 100 percent Colour Volume with Quantum Dot. Finally, there is also an anti-reflection layer to minimise glare and reflections—so you can spend hours with your TV, free of distractions.
Samsung’s latest Neo QLED TVs are equipped with a bunch of Smart and Gaming features to improve your stay-at-home experience, a particularly relevant factor given the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. Tap View, for instance, allows you to mirror movies or music from a compatible smartphone to your Samsung Neo QLED TV—by simply tapping your phone to your TV, as per its name.
There’s also a feature called Multi View, which looks ideal for those of you who need real-time statistics during live football matches. Basically, you’ll be able to watch two sources of content on your TV simultaneously; one half can be dedicated for your STB, or even a game console, and the other half of the display can be dedicated for your smartphone. And of course, you’ll be able to customise the size of each half for the ideal setup, too.
If you have an 8K Samsung Neo QLED TV, you’ll even be able to watch four screens in total, all at the same time.
And what about gamers? Samsung says that its 2021 lineup of QLED TVs come with Motion Xcelerator Turbo+, which means that gamers will be able to enjoy motion enhancements of up to 4K 120Hz. And yes, the TVs are officially certified for FreeSync Premium Pro, so you can enjoy compatible games with reduced stutter and screen tearing, while enjoying low-latency and other benefits of the standard.
Movies are nothing without the right sound, as any avid watcher will tell you. With that in mind, Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs come with a couple of audio-focused features to offer a cinematic sound experience. Firstly, Object Tracking Sound (OTS) Pro matches the movement of objects on screen, while Spacefit Sound is a feature that measures the physical environment of your TV—and outputs sound that is tailored accordingly.
You’ll also have access to Samsung’s real-time noise intelligence feature: Adaptive Sound. When noise occurs in a live environment, this is obviously an annoyance for TV viewers; the new Neo QLED TVs can optimise the sound quality by analysing the acoustics of your environment—and ensuring that clear dialogues are delivered to the viewers.
All of which combines to provide a premium, room-filling experience.
Very often, less is more. Samsung has integrated a minimalist design into its Neo QLED TVs, with the Neo QLED 8K models featuring an Infinity One Design. This is a nearly bezel-less screen, and the result is an even more immersive viewing experience—in a sleek-looking aesthetic, to boot.
For those of you who like to keep things neat, Samsung’s Slim One Connect box is for you. This is the company’s all-new cable management system, and the box can be attached onto the back of the TV—it’s easy to install, and easy to maintain your cables as a result. And yes, you’ll be able to use the Neo QLED TVs with Samsung’s Slim Fit Wall Mount, which will allow you to hang your TV on the wall without any space in between.
Samsung’s aim for 2021 is to deliver products that complement your passions and adjust to your tastes—and to deliver performance to enhance your experiences. The 2021 lineup is Samsung’s ongoing commitment to redefine the role of the TV at home—from the performance of MicroLED to the aesthetic appeal of The Frame.
Environmental concerns are also part of the long-term plan, too. Samsung says that they are on a journey of “Going Green”, and this involves using sustainable packaging design. The company’s “Eco-packaging” design is used on the 2021 Neo QLED lineup, and up to 200,000 tonnes of corrugated boxes can be upcycled each year with this implementation. Meanwhile, the remote control for your Samsung TV can be recharged with indoor/outdoor lighting, or even USB. Besides its handiness, this also means that waste from used AAA batteries is drastically reduced.
The Samsung Neo QLED TVs are arriving on Malaysian shores very soon, with pre-orders starting from the 15th of March until the 28th of March 2021. Samsung promises updates soon, so stay tuned!
