What’s in store for Apple’s rumoured March event?

It’s beginning to look a lot like…. well, not Christmas, obviously. But an Apple Event, with some new launches, might be overdue for March in 2021, with a long list of rumours suggesting that we’ll see a couple of exciting products within Q1 of this year. But is there even going to be an Apple Event in March?

Apple hasn’t actually made an official announcement, but referring to past history, it is possible. In 2020, there wasn’t a Spring event, although the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic might have had a part to play. However, announcements for the new iPad Pro were made, while Apple also released the new MacBook Air and of course, the Magic Keyboard.

All of these releases—along with the iPhone SE 2020—were made via press releases as various countries were hit with restrictions due to the pandemic. Which certainly made a lot of sense. But if you go back another year, Apple held an event during March to announce the Apple Card and Apple Arcade, among other services, and there was also a March event back in 2018.

Plus, a leak on social media has predicted an event on the 23rd of March, so make of that what you will.

What to expect from Apple

In any case, event or no event, we are expecting to see a couple of new releases from Apple in the coming weeks/months. For one thing, a new iPad Pro has been rumoured for awhile now, and Apple is widely expected to equip its top-of-the-line tablet with mini-LED displays for the first time ever.

This is supposed to pave the way for future AMOLED displays, although mini-LEDs will only be available on the 12.9″ iPad Pro first. Following that, the smaller, 11″ iPad Pro will be released with mini-LED at a later date, according to rumours. Beyond its display tech, however, the 2021 iPad Pro will probably look nearly identical to the 2020 iPad Pro… which was nearly identical to the 2018 iPad Pro, in turn.

You will almost certainly get a new chip, of course, one that is probably based on the A14. The A14X, perhaps?

Meanwhile, a new iPad Mini is also rumoured to be in the works, with an 8.4″ display complemented by slimmer bezels for a modern look. That’s as far as the design changes go, however, with Apple possibly going for the same classic iPad design here: thick top and bottom bezels, and a physical home button for Touch ID.

We might also see a successor to the iPhone SE 2020, according to reports. There are some debates as to the veracity of this claim, with notable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo saying that a new iPhone SE won’t be coming until 2022. Still, it’s something to keep an eye out for. Details on the iPhone SE 3 (probably not its actual name) are pretty scarce for now, but we could be seeing a larger, 5.5″ display on Apple’s most affordable iPhone.

Other possible announcements include successors to the AirPods Pro, or a long-awaited update to the Apple TV. But one of the most interesting devices that has yet to be announced by Apple is the AirTags—which has been talked about for a long, long time now. These would basically use the technology of Apple’s ecosystem to help you locate items—so long as they’re attached to AirTags.

So, what do you think? If I had to make a stab of a guess, I’d wager that an event might be happening—but it will definitely be virtual. But that’s not to say that a simple, press release-driven launch might not happen instead.
