Apple’s new feature could notify you if someone has planted a tracking device on you

Apple’s “Find My” app is a convenient way to locate your misplaced devices including your MacBook, iPhone, iPad, AirPods and even the Apple Watch. To provide greater privacy, it appears that the Cupertino company has released a nifty feature to alert you if someone is misusing the service to track your every movement.

As highlighted by iOS developer, Benjamin Mayo, Apple has added an “Item Safety Features” on iOS 14.5 for developers. Once enabled, it will warn you if a tracked Apple device or item that’s not yours has been following you for an extended period of time. This could be potentially be an Apple device or an upcoming device tracker that supports Apple’s Find My app.

The feature is a great step for privacy as it can prevent stalkers from planting a location tracker in your bag or car. This comes ahead of Apple’s potential release of AirTags, which is likely to use Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to locate lost items. The upcoming AirTags should work just like the newly introduced Galaxy Smart Tag where you can attach to your keys, luggage or even pets.

It was also reported that Apple has plans to extend its Find My functionality to support third party use. Before that happens, it seems that Apple has taken the necessary measures to prevent potential misuse.
