COVID-19: 3,297 new cases and 5 deaths today, 1,215 cases reported in Perak

Malaysia has recorded 3,297 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 283,569. This is marks a new surge after 7 days of reporting less than 3,000 new cases daily. There are 5 new deaths reported and the death toll is now 1,056.

The Ministry of Health has reported 4,456 new recoveries and a total of 249,209 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is now 87.88% while the mortality rate is at 0.37%.

There are currently 33,304 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 209 are in ICU while 91 require respiratory support.

Out of the 3,297 new cases today, 6 are imported while 3,291 are transmitted locally. 1,889 out of the 3,291 local cases are non-citizens.

Perak recorded the most with 1,215 cases, followed by Selangor with 868 cases, Johor with 431 cases and Sarawak with 185 cases.

The Ministry of Health has identified 6 new clusters and all are workplace related. Below is the list of new clusters identified:

The Jalan Changkat Jong cluster contributed the most number of new cases today after 1,036 factory workers and 10 close contacts were tested positive. This is followed by the Industri Selesa cluster with 171 new cases and Tanjung Suria cluster with 97 new cases.

In case you missed it, the first batch of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines have arrived in Malaysia this morning. The vaccination programme will begin earlier this Wednesday, 24th February with the Prime Minister and Health D-G being the first recipients. Under phase 1, a total of 500,000 frontliners which cover health, police, immigration, RELA, armed forces and national welfare department will be given priority to be vaccinated by April 2021.
