Instagram will let you restore recently deleted posts, similar to Apple’s Photos app

For those of you who have a knack for deleting Instagram posts on a whim and want a way to retrieve them, this feature can help you get those posts back. The photo-sharing app is rolling out a new Recently Deleted feature that can help recover photos, videos, and stories.

The Recently Deleted feature is rolling out starting today. Here’s how utilise it:

  • In Instagram, tap your profile tab in the bottom right corner
  • Tap the three-lined icon in the top right corner
  • Choose Settings
  • Tap Recently Deleted (check back soon if not available)
  • Choose a post/video/story > tap Restore

Deleted items will stay in the folder for 30 days and if they aren’t touched by then, they will automatically be deleted. However, deleted stories will only stay in the recently deleted section for 24 hours before they’re permanently removed.

The feature is quite similar to the Recently Deleted feature on the iOS Photos app. Recently deleted videos and photos will take up to 40 days to get permanently deleted.

Instagram also has the Archive feature—which includes a monthly calendar view, and a map which shows story locations. The archive feature lets you keep posts and stories in an archive instead of deleting the posts completely. You can bring archived posts back to your feed. For archived stories, you’re able to share them back into your stories as “Memories”.
