MCO extended until 18 February for entire Malaysia except Sarawak

The National Security Council has announced that the current movement control order (MCO) which is supposed to end on 4th February has been extended until 18th February 2021. The two-week extension would overlap with the Chinese New Year festival that falls on the 12th and 13th February 2021.

According to Senior Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the extension was necessary due to the high number of new daily COVID-19 cases reported in all states. Despite the recent MCO 2.0 implementation, Malaysia has recorded 3 straight days of over 5,000 daily cases last week and the total active cases is now over 48,000. Malaysia currently has a total of 219,173 positive cases and 770 deaths as of yesterday.

Sarawak is currently under Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) statewide. However, selected towns and districts such as Sibu, Kanowit, Selangor, Song and Kapit are placed under MCO.

Interstate travel is still not permitted nationwide during the MCO. The Minister shared a total of 31 new COVID-19 clusters had emerged following the lifting of interstate travel in December 2020.
