Netflix is introducing ‘Shuffle Play’ to stop you fighting with your family about what to watch

Netflix has confirmed that they are introducing ‘Shuffle Play’—which lets customers live on the wild side and roll the dice for something to watch. It is expected to roll out for everyone in this coming first half of 2021.

Netflix has been testing the feature since last summer, and even earlier with Android. Twitter user @TurnerLevison even tweeted that he’s received ‘Shuffle Play’, brought up the question, “What kind of insane person just says, ‘yolo, let’s spin the Netflix wheel of fortune?'” In his tweet, the ‘Shuffle Play’ button stays under the Netflix profile icon.

“It’s really working for us where our members can basically indicate to us that they just want to skip browsing entirely, click one button and we’ll pick a title for them just to instantly play. And that’s a great mechanism that’s worked quite well for members in that situation,” said Netflix COO and chief product officer Greg Peters.

However, Netflix isn’t going to choose just anything for you to stick to. It will be based on what you’ve seen previously, titles in genres that you’ve viewed, or content you have saved in the “My List” section.

“For example, when I recently clicked “Play Something,” Netflix started streaming “The Crown” Season 1 (explaining that it was a drama similar to “The Queen’s Gambit,” which I binge-watched last month),” continued Peters.

Another new feature that Netflix is testing out is support for iOS 14’s spatial audio functionality—which is designed to deliver surround sound and 3D audio via your headphones, specifically the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. It could launch sometime in spring.
