Got display backlight issue with your 2016 MacBook Pro 13? Apple will still fix it for free

Are you currently using a MacBook Pro 13 from 2016? Apple has announced that it is extending its display backlight service program for a total of 5 years from the first sale of the unit. The program also covers users in Malaysia.

Two years ago, Apple has acknowledged a screen backlight issue which affects a small number of MacBook Pro 13 that are sold between October 2016 to February 2018. Customers with affected units may send their devices to their nearest Apple Authorised Service Provider and it will be repaired free of charge.

It was reported by ifixit that the issue was caused by a delicate flex cable that can wear out and break after repeated opening and closing of the display. Unfortunately, the cable is part of the display and the solution is to replace the entire display unit. The ‘flexgate’ issue was fixed on the 2018 models by using a new cable that’s 2mm longer.

The program covers MacBook Pro 13 (2016) with both two and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. You can find out which version you’re using by clicking on the Apple logo on the top left corner of the screen and select “About this Mac”.

According to the latest update, the free service program covers eligible MacBook Pro models for 5 years after the first retail sale of the unit of 3 years from the start date of this program, whichever is longer.

Take note that if the MacBook shows additional signs of damage which would affect the repair, that issue might need to be fixed first and you may need to pay for additional repairs. If you’ve previously paid to repair the same backlight issue, you can contact Apple to request for a refund.

Before sending your MacBook Pro in, you would need to back up all your files via Time Machine or through iCloud. You can find your nearest Authorised Apple Service Provider here.

In case you missed it, Apple is also offering free keyboard replacement for selected MacBook models. This include the MacBook Pro 13 and 15 from 2016 until 2019.
