This is the Sony Airpeak, the world’s smallest drone that can carry an Alpha camera system

CES 2021 is currently underway, and among other really cool showcases, we’ve already seen stuff like transparent OLEDs and smart beds. But Sony has just taken the covers off its first drone, the Airpeak—the smallest drone that can carry an Alpha camera system, according to the company.

Like many other consumer-grade drones, Sony says that the Airpeak has been designed with photography and video production in mind:

“Airpeak, the industry’s smallest class of drone that can be equipped with the Alpha system, is capable of dynamic filming and precise, stable flight, and aims to contribute to the world of entertainment while also pursuing new possibilities for creative expression.”

Two videos have been released accordingly, with the first being a rather abstract (but aesthetic) showcase of the Airpeak:

At the moment, Sony has yet to release specs and details on the new drone system, but the Airpeak’s aim is to “support the creativity of video creators”. If you look at the video(s), you’ll see a quadcopter design, along with two landing gears that can be retracted into the body during flights.

Of course, the drone looks rather large—particularly compared to some of DJI‘s more compact models—but this is probably explained by the Airpeak’s ability to carry Alpha cameras. In any case, Sony also released a video of its new drone chasing its very own Vision-S concept car:

So, what else do we know? Not much, in terms of hard details. Suffice it to say, however, that the Sony Airpeak will have its work cut out against DJI—the dominating player in the drone market right now. Perhaps the company is banking on the success of its Alpha cameras to bring onboard new customers, and perhaps there will be more compatibility features to sweeten the pot.

For now, there is no word on pricing, although Sony is aiming for a spring release in 2021. Meanwhile, the company is also looking for “professional collaborators” to be a part of the Airpeak project. This includes individuals and companis who use drones professionally. Find out more about that here.
