Dbrand is making black PlayStation 5 faceplates, challenges Sony to sue them

The Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console currently ships with white faceplates. If you want your PS5 with an all black exterior, renowned skinning company, Dbrand, has just announced its very own PlayStation 5 faceplates that come in matte black.

There are no pricing details just yet and Dbrand says they will only accept orders when they have sufficient stock at their HQ in Toronto. They shared that the faceplates will be entering mass production by the end of this year and it will be available in 2021. They are offering two versions to cover both digital and disc editions.

If you want to be the first to know when you can place an order, you can drop your details here. Dbrand also added that they will be offering optional bundles which include Middle + Controller skins once their faceplates are available for purchase.

Before the PS5 hit the shelves worldwide, the company had previously accepted pre-orders for its custom PS5 skins. Unfortunately, they cancelled all pre-orders as they were not satisfied with the final look of the skinned PS5 as bits of white are still showing.

It’s also worth pointing out that a UK-based company had previously attempted to sell custom PS5 faceplates online, however, they were sued by Sony for trademark infringements. Apparently they thought it wouldn’t be an issue as Sony only had pending patents on the faceplates. Turns out Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates themselves and Sony would take the custom faceplate company to court if they continued to sell them.

When asked if Dbrand was worried about potential legal issues with Sony, the famed Dbrand robot replied “We encourage them to try”. Another person also asked Dbrand what’s their plan for not getting sued, they replied “Nice try, Sony”.

We are also just as curious to know how Dbrand is circumventing the intellectual property concerns. What we do know is that they don’t feature the PS5 logo and maybe there’s a slight change in design to differentiate itself from the Sony produced plates.

At the moment, the PS5 is still hard to come by and Sony didn’t even replenish their stocks during its official launch in Malaysia. To recap, the PS5 digital edition is priced at RM1,869 and the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive version is priced at RM2,299.
