This year, YouTube Rewind is on pause… and people aren’t happy

Every year, YouTube releases a recap video to highlight the top trends of the year, with famous YouTubers usually featured—sometimes, with some pretty cringey results. 2020 was meant to the 11th edition of YouTube Rewind, but unfortunately, the annual video won’t be happening this year.

According to an official statement, YouTube says that it “doesn’t feel right” to release the video this year, with 2020 being “different” for obvious reasons. We don’t know if Rewind will be back in 2021, but seeing as the statement calls this a “break”, we should have the annual recap video back next year (circumstances allowing, of course).

Suffice to say, people aren’t happy. Responses to the original Tweet were mostly negative, although there were a couple of supportive, understanding netizens as well.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything, the famous teardown artist whose work you regularly read about on SoyaCincau.com, shared that 2020 may have been different—but there’s still plenty to be positive about.

Other users called for recognition for creators who continued to produce videos on the platform, despite the various COVID-19-related restrictions.

And some users are just relieved that Rewind isn’t happening in 2020.

What about you? Would you have liked to see a YouTube Rewind 2020? Personally, I’m disappointed. Rewind 2020 could—and should—have been the opportunity for YouTube to work with creators on something a little different.

In any case, there are still fan-made alternatives that are bound to popup as we reach the end of 2020, so you can always go for that instead.
