Sony updates the PS4 with a brilliant feature that plays well with the PS5

The PlayStation 5 (PS5), the latest next-generation console from Sony, is massive upgrade over the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Not only does the PS5 play next-gen games in 4K resolution at 120Hz it also features 3D audio support. Gamers also benefit from faster loading times and the ability to play their classic PS4 games. With all these cutting-edge features, perhaps it is time to pack the old PS4 away or sell it. But not so fast.

Now, Sony has given PlayStation 4 (PS4) owners a good reason to keep their current console around even after they upgrade to the PlayStation 5 (PS5). The company recently confirmed in a blog post that it has updated the PS4’s Remote Play feature to allow gamers to remotely stream next-gen games from their PS5.

According to Sony’s blog:

We’re updating PS4’s Remote Play feature. Now, in addition to being able to access your PS4 from a PC or a mobile device, your PS4 can access other consoles via Remote Play too, right on your TV. This includes the ability to connect to your PS5 and stream a PS5 game to your PS4 so you can play it there.

VGC and Eurogamer reported that a “Remote Play” app has suddenly appeared on their PS4 console recently. According to VGC, the app works like the standard Remote Play app, allowing users to remotely connect to a PS5 console and control it over the internet.

The PS Remote Play app on PC and Mac was recently updated and added support for PS5 streaming.

According to Eurogamer, to connect a PS4 console to a PS5, players will need to enable Remote Play on the newer console’s system menu. Following that have the two console connect automatically via WiFi or enter a supplied code. Once connected, users have the option to pick the resolution they wish to stream their games at, from 360p all the way up to 1080p.

This definitely will come in handy in situations when you want to continue where you left off on a PS5 game on your PS4 console in another room in the house. Granted the experience may not be entirely perfect as Remote Play tends to lag, so it may be a good idea to stick to less competitive games that require fast twitch reflexes.

The app is also said to allow users to play PS5 games using a DualShock 4 controller. However, Sony confirmed that the PS5 does not support the previous generation DualShock 4 controller when playing next-gen games.

However, gamers can use the PS4 controller when playing PS4 games on the PS5. Likewise, you can’t use the PS5’s DualSense controller on the PS4 console.

Sony has also updated the PS Remote Play app for Android, iOS as well as for Windows and Mac with PS5 support. That means you will also be able to stream and play your next-gen games on your laptop, smartphone or tablet.

So, what do you think? Is this a cool feature that would convince you to keep your PS4 around longer? Let us know in the comments section below.
