Sony announced a new project for drones in the field of AI robotics called Airpeak. It aims to contribute to the creation of its imaging and sensing technology, as well as 3R technologies (Reality, Real-time and Remote) in the drone area.
According to their press release, Airpeak will support the creativity of video creators to help contribute to the further development of the entertainment industry. It also aims to improve efficiency and savings in various other industries.
This most likely means that the drone project will concentrate more on professional uses rather than consumer products. And because Sony only released a teaser for Airpeak, it’s not entirely clear if the company will launch its own drone, or if it will offer camera and sensor modules to drone makers.
However, back in January, Sony filed a patent for a foldable drone. It’s got ducted fans mounted on pillars so they can be rotated into the drone’s body for transport and can easily be deployed before flight.
In September, Amazon introduced the Ring drone for your home—an autonomous drone that can fly and it record videos of the rooms inside your home. It’s also got obstacle avoidance technology which allows it to avoid objects in its path and and avoid hurting a pet or person that might collide with the drone.
