Selangor Exco: Latest water cut caused by pollution at Indah Water Rawang plant, sabotage suspected

Residents in Selangor are bracing for yet another water disruption, with Air Selangor confirming that supply will be affected at several locations at 6pm throughout the Klang Valley due to new contamination detected at Sungai Selangor. To rectify the issue, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) has shut down treatment plants at Rantau Panjang, SSP 1, 2 and 3.

To dilute and flush out the contaminating solvents, Air Selangor will release 300 million litres of water from the Sungai Selangor and Sungai Tinggi dams, along with raw water from the KL Larut pond-pumping operation.

Now, Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian has revealed via Malay Mail that the contamination may have originated from the Indah Water plant in Taman Velox, Rawang.

“We found the location that polluted Sungai Selangor was from an Indah Water plant located in Taman Velox. It occurred in Rawang after the Sungai Gong reservoir.”

This is because Air Selangor’s readings at the four affected treatment plants were neutral as of 7am on the day of the incident.

Additionally, preliminary investigations have confirmed that the contamination occurred sometime between 7am and 10am on the 10th of November 2020. The Selangor exco also claims that sabotage may have had a part to play in the current water disruption, while confirming that action will be taken against any potential culprits.

“We suspect there is a sabotage that could have happened; we will make a police report to find out who is the culprit.”

A mere two days ago, the Selangor state government approved amendments to the LUAS enactment legislation, with heavier penalties for river polluters including a mandatory jail sentence. Meanwhile, the state government also allocated RM2 million for a drone operation to prevent such issues from reoccurring.

At the moment, Air Selangor has not confirmed a specific time for the resumption of the water supply in affected areas, although you can stay up to date on this via the official website. For more information on the water disruption and affected areas, scroll down to the related reading section.
