Sean Connery’s foul-mouthed letter to Steve Jobs is fake… obviously

Almost a decade ago, a ridiculous letter—purportedly addressed by Sean Connery to Steve Jobs—made the rounds online. The letter was a supposed rejection by the James Bond actor after Jobs purportedly asked him to appear in an Apple commercial. Connery, who recently passed away at the age of 90, starred in seven 007 films over the years, and is considered by many to be one of the most iconic Bond actors of all time.

The typewritten letter, dated in 1998, reads pretty aggressively, with Connery telling jobs that he will not “sell his soul for Apple”, while reminding the then Apple CEO that he is “f**cking James Bond”. Have a quick read, and tell me if the letter could even remotely pass as authentic to you (be honest):

Yes, I know, I read the letter in Connery’s distinctive accent too, but the truth is that the letter is fake. In fact, Cnet spotted the letter back in 2011, explaining that it was all part of a hoax by humour site Scoopertino. Scoopertino specialises in satirical, Apple-themed content, and the letter was just another example of this.

However, the internet should know better. For one thing, the 007 watermark at the bottom right corner of the letter looks pretty ridiculous. Would Sean Connery (who acted in plenty of films besides Bond ones) keep a custom 007 stamp, and use it for his personal letters? It seems highly, highly unlikely. Would the actor have referred to himself as “f***cking JAMES BOND”, as opposed to the decorated performer that he was?

After the sad news that he passed, it appears that the old letter has surfaced again, making the rounds over social media and other online channels. It’s disappointing, however, that something that has been debunked so long ago would still be popping up—netizens should know better.

Connery reportedly passed away in his sleep a few days ago in Bahamas, with the Oscar-winning actor starring in films including The Untouchables, Indiana Jones, and of course, the Bond films. His son, Jason Connery, told the BBC that his father had been unwell for some time, and his passing is a sad loss for the world.

“A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”
