BANCI 2020: eCensus extended until 21 Dec 2020, interviews postponed to Jan 2021

Due to the increased number of new COVID-19 cases, the Statistics Department of Malaysia has extended the eCensus (Online census) submissions until the 21st December 2020. The eCensus was supposed to end on 6th October with face to face interviews to be conducted from 7th October 2020 onwards.

The eCensus allows Malaysians to participate in the census in a safe and secure manner without the need for a face-to-face interview at their residence. Those that have yet to complete the survey can complete the Census online until the 21st of December 2020. If you haven’t received the postcard with the invitation code, you can also register online here and pre-registration is currently open until 30th November 2020.

Meanwhile, face to face interviews have been postponed to next year and it’s scheduled to take place from 20th January to 6th February 2021.

As of 1st November 2020, a total of 4,591,762 people have been recorded which is about 14% of Malaysia’s population of 32.7 million. The states of Putrajaya, Perak and Selangor have the highest completion rate, while Sabah and East Coast states in Peninsular Malaysia have a completion rate of under 10%.

According to Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, the Statistics department have been receiving about 50,000 completed census each day and they target to get 80,000 to 90,000 submissions per day to achieve its 40-50% completion rate.

During an interview, Mohd Uzir revealed that there are 108 questions for this year’s census versus 50 from Census 2010. He added that the questions are not from the Malaysian Statistics Department but rather from various ministries, agencies and private organisation.

The information obtained from the Census will help the country’s development plans as it provides vital population information for public policies and planning for infrastructure, facilities and other developments.
