Leak: The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will come with a gigantic camera bump and a mystery sensor

The Galaxy S21 (or will it be the S30?) hasn’t even been confirmed by Samsung yet, but we’ve already gotten a good idea of what the flagship smartphone will look like. A series of leaked renders earlier revealed a gigantic camera bump that stretches to the side and top on the phone’s back. Now, we get a closer look at the frankly gigantic module.

Serial leakster Steven Hemmerstoffer shared via Voice that the latest prototype of the Galaxy S21 Ultra will have up to five rear cameras—or four cameras and a mysterious sensor. Based on that new information, Hemmerstoffer shared a render:

The latest render is slightly different from the original renders shared on Voice a couple of days ago. According to Hemmerstoffer, Samsung has been “indecisive” about the rear configuration of their upcoming range-topper, although the current information is based on the final prototype before mass production. Additionally, he says that it is likelier that we’ll be seeing an (unknown) sensor, rather than a fifth camera.

For some context, Voice shared renders a few days ago showing off the purported Galaxy S21’s huge camera bump. Based on the new information, there appears to be an additional sensor in the new render, with the flash LED now sitting in between two sensors on the right of the module.

From what we’ve heard so far, we might be seeing a large display on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (6.7″ to 6.9″), along with the expected 120Hz refresh rate. The camera bump will also house a periscope telephoto lens, although it remains to be seen if we’ll see an improvement on the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 100x Space Zoom. Contrary to rumours, we probably won’t see an S Pen included on the Galaxy S21—that will remain exclusive to the Note series.

For now, we don’t even know if the next Galaxy S-series phone will be called the Galaxy S21. Personally, I think that the S30 name would make more sense than S21—why else would Samsung have jumped from the S10 to the S20?

As for the additional sensor, any guesses? Over at big rivals Apple, the iPhone 12 Pro series comes with a new LiDAR sensor—one that was first debuted on the iPad Pro 2020—that helps with autofocusing and AR applications. Perhaps we’ll see something similar on Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.
