Netflix is planning on giving non-subscribers in India free access for two days without needing to opt for a subscription plan. The platform is calling the event “StreamFest”.
Netflix’s chief operating officer Greg Peters says that StreamFest is just for India now. However, Peters says that something like StreamFest “could really create an event”.
“An idea we’re excited about—and we’ll see how it goes—[is] we think that giving everyone in a country access to Netflix free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing new stories we have,” Peters said.
Earlier this month, Netflix discontinued their free trial option in the U.S. which allowed potential subscribers to test the service for a 30 day trial. Netflix Malaysia has also said that free trials aren’t available any longer.
“You have the freedom to change your plan or cancel online at any time if you decide Netflix isn’t for you. As a Netflix member, all our plans give you access to our full catalog of TV shows and movies,” wrote Netflix Malaysia.
StreamFest will kick off the first one on 4 December in India. Depending on the results, it may expand the test to other markets in the future.
Besides introducing new ways to attract new subscribers, Netflix is also working on a few updates that current users might enjoy. For example, the company is testing out a new feature that lets you switch off the “Are You Still Watching?” notification.
