iPhone 12 battery capacity reported to be 9% smaller than iPhone 11

After Apple revealed the new iPhone 12 series last week, it released details about the typical specs we would come to expect except for one important detail: the battery capacity for each of the phones. This is par for the course though, as Apple typically does not reveal the battery capacity for its iPhone models but lists its estimated battery life.

Now, according to alleged certification documents by Brazil’s Anatel (the country’s equivalent of the U.S.’s FCC) obtained by Tecnoblog, it said that the iPhone 12 has a 2,815mAh battery while the iPhone 12 mini has a 2,227mAh capacity.

Anatel is reported to have approved the batteries of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max but the capacities for those devices are not revealed at this time.

Looking at each of the models individually, the iPhone 12’s stated battery capacity is actually smaller compared to the 3,109mAh battery found in last year’s iPhone 11.

Meanwhile, the new iPhone 12 mini has an even smaller battery, which is to be expected given its compact size. At the very least, the iPhone 12 mini’s battery is still bigger than the 2020 iPhone SE’s 1,821mAh battery.

According to Apple, the iPhone 12 mini offers at up to 15 hours of video playback. That is slightly shorter than the iPhone XR but two hours longer than the 2020 iPhone SE.

There is some cause for concern as the iPhone 12 has a higher resolution display and comes with a smaller battery, this may impact battery life. However, based on Apple’s website the iPhone 12 retains the same 17-hour battery life as the iPhone 11. This could be a result of the improvements made by Apple’s in-house developed A14 Bionic chip that uses 5nm fabrication process that results in greater power efficiency.

The iPhone 12 Pro is rumoured to have a 2,775mAh battery, which is significantly smaller than its predecessor’s 3,109mAh battery. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is expected to have a 3,687mAh battery that is also smaller than the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 3,968mAh capacity. However, both figures are not verified so take this information with a grain of salt.

Aside from mention of the battery capacity, the Anatel documents also mention that the iPhone 12 Pro will be assembled in Brazil and India by Foxconn. Apple has been assembling some of its products in these countries for some time as they both offer tax incentives to companies that build their products locally.
