Air Selangor: New water disruption due to contamination affects 1.2 million Klang Valley users

[ UPDATE 19/10/2020 21:40 ]: Air Selangor will begin restoration at 8.00am on 20th October. Full restoration expected by Friday. More details here.

===

Just as Air Selangor recovers from the burst pipe incident over the weekend, the water works company has announced a new water disruption which affects twice as many areas in the Klang Valley. The latest disruption will affect 1,196,457 account holders located at 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

According to Air Selangor, they have to shut down the water treatment plants at Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang following a contamination that was detected in the raw water source from Sungai Selangor this morning at 2.00am on 19th October 2020. The contamination detected was rated at 1 TON (Threshold Odour Number) as of 6.30am.

With the shutdown of the 4 treatment plants, users in affected areas will face unscheduled water disruption. For the previous incident, the water restoration progress was at 80% as of 2.00am this morning but it has to be postponed due to the current situation.

To dilute and to flush the contaminants from the raw water source, Air Selangor has to release water from its Hybrid Off-River Augmentation System (HORAS 600) that has a capacity of 285 million litres per day and also raw water from its dam that has a capacity of 800 million litres per day. Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) has also done the same by releasing raw water by pumping water from KL-Larut lake that has a capacity of 336 million litres per day.

Air Selangor will provide water supply by mobilising its water tank trucks to affected areas with priority given to high critical areas such as hospitals and dialysis centres. Consumers that need immediate water supply for emergency purposes can contact them by calling 15300.

So far the water works company has yet to give an estimated restoration timeline and they will provide more updates via their social channels and website.

You can find the list of affected areas here.
