Sony’s software that turns its digital cameras into webcams now available for Macs

Mac users who are looking to up their Zoom or Skype game will be pleased to know that Sony has released a new version of its Imaging Edge Webcam software for Mac computers. The software was originally released back in August but was limited to just Windows users.

Now Mac users, running on macOS 10.13 and above, can directly plug in a supported Sony cameras to their computers to be used as high-quality webcams for online video calls. Just like the PC solution, the software does not require additional hardware like a USB capture-card for users to get started.

According to Sony’s website, the new software works with 36 of its cameras. It also includes recently released E-mount and A-mount series cameras. You can go to this website to check if your camera is supported. Once you find your model, click on it, download the software and follow Sony’s instructions to set it up.

Here’s a list of cameras Sony says is supported by its software.

Among the notable models that are supported include the A9 II, A7S III, A66000, A6500, as well as the RX100 VII compact camera, RX0 II action camera and ZV-1 vlog camera.

It should be noted that certain models like the original A7 full frame DSLR and the A6000 APS-C camera are not supported. Even so, you can still connect the two cameras to use as a webcam but you will need an HDMI capture card. After a quick check on Lazada and Shopee, we came across several models that were sold as low as RM25 and goes up to over RM300.

Sony was one of the last camera company to offer a software solution that allowed users to directly hooked its cameras to their computers. In fact, they are pretty late to the game. Other camera makers like Canon, Olympus, Fujifilm, Panasonic and GoPro have already launched similar solutions months ago.
