iPhone 12 leak: Faster Face ID, improved zoom, and improved battery life

Interest is intensifying ahead of the launch of the iPhone 12, with a series of leaks already suggesting that we’ll be seeing four models: an iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Rather disappointingly, we’ve also heard that the iPhone 12 series might not come with a high refresh rate on its display—not even 90Hz.

Max Weinbach has just shared “finalised and revised” information, building upon more leaked info from Weibo user “Kang”. Essentially, pricing for the series might start at USD 699 (~RM2,893) for the iPhone 12 Mini, with the new LiDAR scanner reserved for the Pro models. This would mean that we’d be seeing five total “current” iPhone models—which would appear to be a change in strategy from the Cupertino-based company.

Additionally, Weinbach claims that Face ID will be improved on the upcoming iPhones. This is down to a “dynamic zoning algorithm” feature:

The "dynamic zoning algorithm" is shipping. The redesigned TrueDepth Camera System though, is not. Instead, a more "tightly" arranged TrueDepth will be shipped with the 5.4" iPhone. The notch shrinks horizontally, but increases slightly vertically.

The Pro models could also feature an upgrade for zoom—both optical and digital. The standard iPhone 12 should also have improved digital zoom, with up to 30x suggested by the leak. Digital zoom is supposedly improved for quality as well, with an algorithm based on Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 3 responsible for this.

Other possible camera updates include a macro camera-like feature. You should be able to get 2.2cm closer to an object without losing focus (compared to the iPhone 11 Pro), while the ultra-wide camera should also be gaining some improvements for low light performance. Weinback warns, however, that much of these improvements will be made for the range-topping Pro Max only.

Expect at least an 1 hour battery life increase for the Pro Models. As seen in internal tests, the 5.4" iPhone will perform worse than the current iPhone 11, which is expected because of its form factor.

And finally, we’ll be seeing longer battery life for the Pro models—although the Mini might be slightly worse than the current base model: the iPhone 11. That said, the Mini appears to be a brand new segment, so a direct comparison might be unfair.

So, what do you think? The iPhone 12 is confirmed to be launching any day now, so if you want to find out more, scroll down to the related reading section for the details. And as always, keep SoyaCincau.com bookmarked on your browser for the full coverage.
